Sustaining Local Aquaculture Habitat

The Gino Macchio Foundation’s ongoing Oyster Restoration work, focuses on our commitment to increase the oyster population, while improving the health of our local waterways. Oysters are one of nature’s most efficient filters of sediment and nitrogen, the excess of which is plaguing our waterways by causing algal blooms that kill off aquatic creatures and their habitats. One adult oyster is capable of filtering 50 gallons of water a day, so the idea is to make sure they have a lot of company!

Debris Clean-Up

The Gino Macchio Foundation spent the day, after a bad winter, cleaning up debris from the beaches in the Great South Bay. We have made contact with other groups and organizations with a similar mission and plan to conduct Great South Bay cleanup events throughout the year. Working together gets the job done. Special Thanks to Operation Splash and the Great South Bay Society for the outstanding work and advocacy devoted towards improving the quality of life along our Long Island shores.

GET INVOLVED

TEAMING UP WITH Molloy University

The Gino Macchio Foundation has teamed up with Molloy University to conduct a field sampling campaign to assess the ecosystem and health of the oyster population in the Great South Bay. The research team led by Dr. Elizabeth Suter, head of the Microbial Ecology Lab at Molloy University, is conducting two scientific studies through the end of August 2023. One aspect of the project involves assessing the ecosystem biodiversity using eDNA, comparing oyster farms, oyster reefs, and other site types. The second involves an analysis of oyster pathogen incidence among oyster populations at a particular site.

congratulations to Sal LaFemina

The Gino Macchio Foundation is pleased to announce that Sal LaFemina, current Executive Director of the Town of Babylon’s Beacon Family Wellness Center is joining its newly formed Advisory Board. Mr. LaFemina is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has spent over 40 years working with people who are struggling with addictions and mental health challenges, and with the systems and agencies established to meet their needs. He has long enjoyed supporting the fields of social work and addictions treatment and the new workers who are challenged to learn the skills needed to thrive in them. He has also played a role in key leadership and advocacy groups that bring professionals together to tackle the problems in human service work. Mr. LaFemina is in private practice providing individual, group, couples counseling and supportive therapy for his peers.
